What is a cubic metre and how many boxes make one cubic metre.
We’ll show you the formula for calculating cubic metres.
How to work out the total cubic metres for all your furniture e.g. your sofa, fridge, cupboard, coffee table, chair or bookcase.
We’ll show you the capacity of our various trucks to help you with your next Melbourne or Sydney moving cost estimate.
01 · How much is one cubic metre
Cubic metre is a unit used to measure volume. Sometimes people spell it ‘cubic meter’ — however, the unit is correctly spelled ‘cubic metre’ here in Australia.
One cubic metre (1 m³) is a cube that has all sides 1 metre long. When it comes to moving boxes, it takes about 8 mid- to large-sized moving boxes to make up a cubic metre. And no, they don’t have to be in the shape of a cube! Even if you line them up side by side, they’ll still add up to one cubic metre.
02 · How to calculate m³ of an item
Measure all three dimensions of your item: length (L), width (W), and height (H), then multiply them. Always convert to metres first — for example, if the depth of your fridge is 64 cm, use 0.64 m in the calculation.
03 · Common household items
We’ve included the cubic metres for some of the most commonly moved household items. Of course, your items may be a bit bigger or smaller depending on their specifications — measure them up and calculate the m³ yourself, or use these indicative values to estimate the total cubic metres of the items you need to move.
Although we do our best to load your stuff efficiently, there will always be space that cannot be utilised. Select a moving truck that has at least 10–20% more space available than your total volume in m³.
